Richmond Pageturners

Richmond Pageturners program empowers African American 2nd graders Under the direction of retired elementary school teachers and early childhood education interns, Art at Vibe will foster a love of reading and build strong readers in our community. Even in 2nd grade, strong literacy skills can be the key to unlocking a world of wonder in art! By reading, the student gains context for the artwork. This newfound knowledge can spark curiosity. Literacy opens doors to a richer art experience.

Drawing Basics (All Ages)

This introductory courses provide a foundation in essential drawing techniques for aspiring artists of all ages. Participants will explore core concepts such as line, shape, shading, and composition through a variety of exercises and projects. The course emphasizes developing observational skills, hand-eye coordination, and confidence in visual expression.

Painting Techniques (All Ages)

This course delves into the exciting world of color! Participants will explore different painting mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, and oil, learning fundamental techniques and applications. Through creative exercises and projects, participants will gain the skills to create beautiful and expressive artwork.

Food Art (All Ages)

A one-of-a-kind program that dives deep into the world of edible artistry. It’s not just about cooking; it’s about transforming everyday meals into visually stunning creations. The program starts at the ground up, with participants getting their hands dirty in a gardening session. Here, they’ll learn how to cultivate fresh produce, the very foundation of their artistic plates. Once they’ve harvested their bounty, the program moves into the kitchen where participants will explore culinary techniques and food styling principles. They’ll learn plating tricks, discover how to use food itself as an artistic medium, and unleash their creativity to bring their artistic vision to life. But be warned, due to the potential use of sharp utensils in the kitchen, this program is for teens and adults only.

Textile Art (Teens & Adults)

This course offers an introduction to various textile techniques. Participants will learn the basics of sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, and quilting, gaining the skills to create unique and functional textile pieces. The course fosters creativity, practical skills development, and personal expression through the art of textiles. (Age restriction due to use of needles and potentially sharp tools.)

Art History (Teens & Adults)

Embark on a captivating journey through time! Centering Africans in the diaspora, this course explores different art movements and iconic artists throughout history. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the evolution of art, analyzing styles, themes, and historical context. The course fosters a critical appreciation for the rich history of visual art. (Age restriction due to potentially complex historical concepts.)

Literature (All Ages)

This course delves into the captivating world of written expression. Participants will explore various literary genres such as poetry, novels, plays, and essays. The course emphasizes critical reading skills, creative writing techniques, and literary analysis. Participants will develop their own creative voice while gaining a deeper appreciation for different forms of literature.

Performing Arts (All Ages)

This course ignites creativity through movement and storytelling! Participants can choose to explore acting, dance, or musical performance in a supportive and encouraging environment. The course fosters confidence, artistic expression, and collaboration skills as participants develop their talents in their chosen performing art form.

Cinema (Teens & Adults)

Lights, camera, action! This course offers an introduction to the exciting world of filmmaking. Participants will learn the essential steps of film production, including storyboarding, directing, and basic production techniques. Culminating in the creation of their own short films, participants will gain hands-on experience and develop a deeper understanding of the filmmaking process. (Age restriction due to potentially complex technical concepts and equipment usage.)

Art at Vibe is recognized as a public charity in California and is fiscally sponsored by Sankofa Garden. Donations to Sankofa Garden are deductible. Donors should consult their tax advisor for questions regarding deductibility. The Sankofa Garden EIN is 84-3686441.
